New Westminster Fraser Book

My frustration continues first the printer had a fire in the electrical room and got me 25 books last Friday.  The 1000 books owed are at the bindery where there has been a problem and 100 were to be ready today.  Now I must wait till Tuesday for the full order as the 100 were cancelled today incorectly. I am to receive a discount but that does not get me the books to say the least I am upset.

New Deadline

If all goes as planned the book goes to press on April 29.  A launch date of June 6th.  Books will be sent to those who helped the week of MAY 20TH-26TH to the players, Dean Taylor, Jeanne Savage, photographer Basil King and Topps trading cards.

Missed deadline

My Monday April 19th deadline has passed without the book to printer.  Next deadline is April 30th.

Monday is D- Day

Monday April 19th is deadline day to get the book to the publisher.  The book must be in to the publisher Monday to have it printed by Friday.  New Westminster Art's Council has a book fair on Saturday at Royal City Centre (6th Street & 6th Avenue) where I would like to launch the book " The New Westminster Frasers Baseball Club".  Book cover copied hopefully everything will be ready for printer.

Book is finished

The book on the New Westminster Frasers Baseball Club is finished and now the finishing touches to get it ready for printing. If all goes well the book goes to print Monday.

Jeff Cox has settled in for the 2010 season coaching from 3rd base line of the Chicago White Sox.

Rob Arnold was the Frasers only Canadian

Rob Arnold was the only Canadian on the New Westminster Frasers roster.  Arnold had been a prospect of the St. Louis Cardinals as a 19 year old.

36 years since the Frasers played

The New Westminster Frasers were an idea in 36 years ago of  Dean Taylor and Mike Manning.  The buillding of the team then took until June with tryout camps held throughout Southern California and later Oregon.

Where are Werdick and Wojcik???

I am still very interesting in locating both Greg Werdick and John Wojcik to talk about their New Westminster Fraser season.

Outfielder Floyd Beech

New Westminster Frasers outfielder Floyd Beech was the oldd man of the squad at 26.  Beech had played for the Chicago Cubs organization in 1970.  1973 Beech was with Portland.  I have not been able to locate Floyd Beech.

I have ordered the bar code for the New Westminster Frasers Baseball Club book.  It is slowly coming together with a hopeful book launch April 23.

It was nice to receive an e-mail from Robbie Robinson.  Robinson answered my questions as well he sent a Fraser photo of himself. 

Topps gives permission

I have obtained written permission from Topps to use two of their cards.  Now I need to obtain Major League Baseball's permission to use logos and team names from the cards.

Getting Bellingham quotes for book

I have been checking the pricing of printing in Bellingham Washington in order to be able to market more in the US.  The pricing is reasonable thus ove rthe Easter weekend I will check on storage for the books New Westminster Frasers Baseball Club.  I will have some printed in Canad aand some in the US.

New Westminster Frasers first sackers

Robbie (Henry) Robinson, Curt Daniels and Doug Meyer shared firstbase for the New Westminster Frasers.  When they were not playing firstbase the 3 would be the designated hitter.

New Westminster Fraser catchers

The New Westminster Fraser had three catchers Dave Abdalla, Tim Hughes and James Willoughby.   Tim Hughes is a VP of an international Insurance Company. I have not been able to contact Abdalla and Willoughby.   If anyone has contact information it would be appreciated.

Dean Taylor of the Kansas City Royals

Dean Taylor graduated from Claremont McKenna College (Calif.) in 1973 earning a Bachelor's degree in Economics.  Dean Taylor then formed the 1974 expansion New Westminster Frasers.  Dean graduated from Ohio University in 1975 with a Master's degree in Sports Administration.  Dean was named the 2001 Distinguished Alumnus of the Ohio University Sports Administration Program.  Without Taylor's tremendous assistance the work on the Fraser's history would have been very difficult to learn.

John Wojcik the 2nd Fraser Manager

John Wojcik was named the 2nd manager of the New WestminsterFrasers prior to the 1974 season.  Wojcik had pitched from 1966-68 then came back with the 1973 Portland Mavericks.  Wojcik was only 27 years old when he was named manager of the New Westminster Frasers.

Frosty Kennedy a real character

Frosty Kennedy had been announced as the New Westminster Coach on February 15, 1974 when the nickname Frasers was annnounced.  Frosty had a checkered past having signed with Riverside in 1947 then playing only one game as he left the team. Kennedy then returned in 1948 to Riverside playing 139 games hitting .361.

New Westminster Frasers fielding in the middle of the pack

New Westminster Frasers fielding percentage of .941 was ahead of the Bellingham Dodgers, Lewiston Broncs and the Tri-City Ports.

Frosty Kennedy the original Frasers Manager

Frosty Forrest Kennedy was minor league icon.  Kennedy is the only minor league player who hit .411 in 1948 and .410 in 1953.  Kennedy also hit 60 homer runs in 1956.  Thus Kennedy is the only player who hit both over .400 and slugging 60 homers.

Lee Sigman of the New Westminster Frasers

Lee Sigman began playing pro baseball in 1972.  Sigman saw a shot time in 1974 with the New Westminster Frasers.  In 1978 Lee began managing and in 1981 was manager of the AAA Vancouver Canadians.  Sigman managed in Mexico for a few years.  The last I could learn Lee was scouting in Mexico for the New York Yankees. I have not been able to contact Lee atlthough I asked the Yankees to help.

The Frasers Shine in Doubleheader

The New Westminster Frasers had an incrediable doubleheader as Brad Rehn the first game pitching a one hitter. But tthen he was out done in the second game by his teammate Sam Basile as he then threw a no-hitter.

Darryl Woods in his college Hall of Fame

Darryl Woods was an outstanding slugging first baseman with Northwestern State University.  Standing 6ft 7 in Woods was an imtimidating ballplayer.  New Westminster Frasers in need of pitching  used Darryl as a pitcher in one game in which he never got to bat.

Wojcik,Benson and Brooks well used Frasers

John Wojcik, George Benson and Larry Brooks were used in a team high 23 games each for the New Westminster Frasers.  Wojcik was 2W 5Lm, Benson 6W 7 L and Brooks 3W and 4L for the Frasers.

New Westminster Frasers team was about average for the Northwest League

The New Westminster Fraser swere last in hitting with a team batting average of .251 verses League average of .258.  The Frasers pitching was 7th with a 4,74 whislt the League's was 4.08.  Fielding the Frasers were 5th with a team average .942 compared to .946.

Sigman was mister versitle for the New Westminster Frasers

Lee (Sanford) Sigman was used as a utility player by the New Westminster Frasers. Positions that Sigman played were pitcher, shortstop and third baseman for the New Westminster Frasers.

Jim Fradella led the New Westminster Frasers in doubles

Jim Fradella had 11 doubles, 2 triples and  3 home runs to lead the the New Westminster Frasers in doubles, triples and extra bases.  Fradella had 16 of his 66 hits for extra bases.

Winkelbauer played one game for the New Westminster Frasers

Tom Winkelbauer pitched only one game for the Frasers.  Winkelbauer was traded to both the Portland Mavericks and the Eugene Emeralds ending the season with a 5W 6L record.

Carlos Hernandez led the New Westminster frasers in hits

Carlos Hernandez had 299 at bats with 82 hits to lead in that department for the New Westminster Frasers.
Playing infiled positions for the Frasers made Hernandez valuable. I am still trying to contact Rocky Hernandez.

Doug Meyer leading hitter of the Frasers

The New Westminster Frasers were lead with 4 HRs by Doug Meyer who batted .330.  Meyer went to bat 203 times hammering out 67 hits to lead the Frasers.

Dave Stacy pitched only one year of pro baseball and it was with the New Westminster Frasers,  Pitching in 178 games with a 3 W 6L record.  I am still trying to contact Stacy to get his story,

New Westminster Thomas Berry

Thomas Berry played 71 games for the 1973 Portland Mavericks and 72 games for the New Westminster Frasers in 1974.  Baseball research does not have the age or dob of Berry.  Thomas an outfilder was one of the players that I could not contact.  If any one has further information on where Thomas Berry was born, his date of birth, what his middle initial "S" stands for or his present whereabouts it would be much appreciasted if you contact me,

New Westminstwe Frasers outfielder Beech

Floyd Beech covered the outfield in 80 0f the Frasers 84 games. Beech batted .209 during the New West's 1974 season.  At this time I have not been in contact with Beech although I have written to him with a SASE. I would like to know what the "C" stands for in Beech's middle initial.

Lewiston's McCatty becomes a Cox team mate

Lewiston's Broncs Steve McCatty would in 1978 become a Vancouver Canadian where he became a teammate of Jeff Cox.  Cox had batted against McCatty in 1974.

Former New Westminster Frasers have successful other jobs

The former New Westminster Frasers suc as Bill Crissman, Curtis Daniels and Chris Kinder are and were successful teachers and baseball coaches after their retirement from baseball.

Mike Averill's family connection

Mike Averill's grandfather Earl Howard Averill was a Hall of Famer playing 1929-41.  Mike's father Earl Douglas Averill  played from 1956-63.  Mike Averill played the 1974 season with the New Westminster Frasers.

New Westminster Fraser Larry Brooks Pressure Points

Pressure Points by Larry Brooks a former New Westminster Fraser is another great thriller.  Once I began to read the book it alomst impossible to put down.  I was spellbound by the plot.

New Westminster Charles VanSchoyck

Charles VanSchoyck is in the Hall of fame for Azusa Pacific University for his strong college career.  VanSchoyck played 70 games for the New Westminster Frasers.  1974 was VanSchoyck`s only professional season. I contact Azusa Pacific and they forwarded my request for Charles to answer my questions but as of yet I have not heard from VanSchoyck.

Henry Robbie Robinson of the New Westminster Frasers

Henry Robinson known as Robbie played 60 games for the New Westmnister Frasers.  After retirement Robinson has gone into acting.  I have so far not been able to contact Robbie.

Looking for Carlos Rocky Hernandez

Rocky Hernandez a second baseman/shortstop has not been located by myself.  Hernandez stats showed he played 81 games where the New Westminster Frasers played 84. If you have a contact for Hernandez please let me know.

Former General Manager Dean Taylor of the New Westminster Frasers has been extremely open and supportive of my book project.  Taylor has been available to assist, inform and correct me as I work on the New Westminster Frasers book.  I have found Dean to be very helpful as he talked about the Frasers.

I am awaiting replies from George Benson a lawyer in Snohomish, WA and Larry Brooks of Portland Oregon.  Much of the book is complete with some error correcting and inserting of footnotes,  Also awainting permission to publish some photos from the Vancouver Sun and Province as well as the Lewiston Morning Tribune.

David Abdalla of the New Westminster Frasers

David Abdalla caught 39 games for the New Westminster Frasers.  I am still trying to locate Abdalla to hear storie s of his season.

New Westminter Frasers new manager Greg Werdick

Greg Werdick took over the reins of the New Westminster Fraser part way into the season. Werdick played minor league baseball from 1965 to 1972 in the Chicago Cubs and then the San Diego Padres organizations.  1974 appears to be Werdick`s only year of managing and the end of his professional baseball career.

1974 found bestselling thriller author Larry Brooks pitching for the New Westminster Frasers.  Brooks weaves a web of intrigue that keeps a reader spellbound. Now I have finished my 3rd Brooks novel I want to locate “Pressure Points”. Larry Brooks has a website: storyfix.com that a novelist hopeful should check-out.  As yet Brooks has not made a baseball player one of his heroes.

New Westminster Frasers' Jeff Cox made the Majors

Jeff Cox who played 49 games for both the 1974 Portland Mavericks and the New Westminster Frasers.  Cox in 1978 played for the Vancouver Canadians and in 1980  made to the Majors with the Oakland A's.  Cox went onto manage in the Minors and in 2000 mid season Felipe Alou brought Cox up to the Montreal Expos as a coach. Since 2007 Cox has been the 3rd base coach of the Chicago White Sox going into 38th year in baseball.

I have almost finished my third book by New Westminster Fraser award winning author Larry Brooks ``Serpant Dance``.  The New Westminster Library does not have any books by Larry Brooks thus I will have to find them on the internet.

New Westminster Frasers an independent team

Dean Taylor built the expansion New Westminster Frasers with tryout camps and working with the Portland Mavericks.  Althought the New Westminster Frasers had a losing season they had a better record than two of the other teams.

The New Westminster Frasers one year Club

In January 1974 the Northwest League expanded to eight teams and the New Westminster Frasers were born.  I was an idea of Dean Taylor a 23 year old with his friend Mike Manning who felt that they had the ability to run a baseball franchise.  Ove r1974 they proved they had the knowledge to stock and run a team.

Brooks is a well known thriller author of books such as Darkness Bound and Bait and Switch. Brooks had pitched five years of professional ball. Starting with the California Angels, then the Washington Senators which became the Texas Rangers organizations. Larry`s last pro year was 1974 with the independent New Westminster Frasers and the Portland Mavericks.
